Scope: GMD were approached by a major Aerospace and Defence supplier to support their R&D and New Technologies Department. Part of the innovate work they do involves using robotics and automation to complete complex tasks previous carried out by hand when machining, assembling and inspection large scale composite parts. The frame pictured below, although relatively unassuming, serves as part of the infrastructure involved in moving that industry forwards.

The customer provided GMD with a model, we were then able to develop our own technical drawings to ensure the highest quality during production. Due to the accuracy required, the parts were initially welded, then stress relieved, final machined and inspected using our new Keyence XM5000 portable CNC machine. A perfect job for the machine given this size off assembly would not fit on many conventional fixed CMM machines.
