Active Steering Geometry System

GMD Eurotool is surging into the high-tech world of international motorcycle racing with a revolutionary system that automatically with the use sensors adjusts the rake of a motorcycle’s front forks to optimise high-speed stability and manoeuvrability.

Active Steering Geometry SystemDesign engineers and component manufacturers GMD Eurotool Ltd have collaborated with the system’s designer; engineer Alan Sleith to produce a prototype, which will be launched to bike racing teams next year. Managing Director Gary Sansom said; “We now have a patent pending for the electro hydraulic system after seven years of development work.”

GMD Eurotool, which employs 18 highly skilled staff at Langage Industrial Estate, Plympton, was helped on its successful journey with a business review and action plan from Business Link Devon and Cornwall.

Personal business adviser John Tregaskis helped with the sourcing of the right professional people to help with the patent and the company was granted a successful result in the patent search in October. More recently John James sourced assistance for the firm to upgrade its website and to support brand development and marketing activities. In 2004 Business Link also helped the company to achieve IS0 9001:2000 quality accreditation.

“We have an excellent relationship with Business Link which has a really positive effect on our business. When we have been in need, they have always pointed us in the right direction and their advice is superb,” added Mr Sansom.

After being set up 12 years ago, GMD Eurotool Ltd. developed a niche market in the engineering sector as an innovative problem-solving business. It specialises in the design and manufacture of automated production machinery, Marine components and Precision tooling, taking ideas through the whole process from design to prototype and then on to manufacture.

The customer base ranges from large multi-nationals such as the Smith and Nephew to specialist niche providers.

“Historically we grew through servicing local high-tech businesses – employing up to 1,000 in the engineering sector, many have now disappeared from the Plymouth travel-to-work area over the last five years,” explained Mr Sansom.

“Despite this, we successfully sought new customers and markets and remained profitable through what were turbulent times thanks to product innovation and astute marketing.

“We have high hopes for this new actuator and for several other new innovative projects in the pipeline.”
